What Saying “Yes” Is Really Costing You

Every decision in a dental practice comes with a trade-off. Time, energy, and resources are limited, which means saying yes to one opportunity often means saying no to another. This concept, known as opportunity cost, plays a larger role in dentistry than many realize.

Accepting every type of procedure or patient can seem like a way to maximize revenue, but it can also lead to inefficiency. Time spent on lower-value procedures may take away from time that could be used for higher-value treatments. Over time, these small decisions shape the overall productivity and profitability of the practice.

Opportunity cost also applies to how time is spent outside of patient care. Administrative tasks, meetings, phone calls, and daily distractions can take away from strategic planning and growth-focused activities. When these responsibilities are not managed carefully, they can limit progress and leave important priorities waiting on the sidelines.

Recognizing opportunity cost allows for more intentional decision-making. It encourages a focus on activities that align with long-term goals rather than short-term convenience. This may involve refining the types of services offered, adjusting scheduling priorities, improving workflows, or delegating tasks to the team.

The same principle applies to technology and systems. A tool that saves a few minutes in one area may create additional work elsewhere if it does not fit the practice’s workflow. Evaluating the total impact of a decision can help prevent practices from investing time and money in solutions that do not provide meaningful value.

Clarity around priorities helps ensure that time and resources are used effectively. Instead of trying to do everything, the focus shifts to doing the right things. Sometimes, the most valuable decision a practice can make is recognizing when saying no creates room for something more important.
