Conspiracy Theories in Your Practice?

Is your team whispering about secret sales, shady raises, or sudden schedule changes?

When leaders go quiet, conspiracy theories get loud. And if you don’t fill in the blanks — your team will.

And guaranteed, the blanks will be filled in in ways that are not beneficial to you.

🗣️ Learn how to shut down the rumor mill and build a culture of clarity in your practice.

Is There a Conspiracy Theory Floating Around Your Office?

Why Transparency Isn’t Optional in a High-Trust Dental Office

We see it everywhere — media, politics, even at concerts: the wildfire of conspiracy theories. But here’s the kicker — they’re not just “out there.” They creep into dental practices, too.

When there’s a lack of transparency, your team will fill in the blanks. And spoiler alert: they’ll rarely write you in as the hero.

Sound familiar?

· “Did you hear they’re selling the practice?”

· “I bet the new hygienist makes more than I do.”

· “Why did the schedule change again? No one tells us anything.”

Left unchecked, these whispers evolve into full-blown soap operas starring… you. And the cost? Eroding trust, rising drama, and a quiet mutiny of respect.

So, how do you stop it?

1. Overcommunicate Before They Speculate

Silence isn’t neutral — it’s loud. When leadership goes mum (intentionally or not), it creates a vacuum that sucks in worst-case assumptions.

Instead: Communicate early and often. Even if all you have is, “We’re still exploring, and no decisions have been made,” you’re defusing anxiety. A little openness buys you a lot of calm.

2. Real-World Example: Dr. H and the Transition Whisper Network

Dr. H, a beloved practice owner, was exploring future options — a partner, an associate buy-in, maybe a DSO offer. She didn’t plan to retire tomorrow; she was just… curious.

But to the team, her silence screamed “corporate sellout!” Within weeks, they were polishing resumes and mourning the culture they loved.

Finally, with her consultant’s help, Dr. H addressed the elephant:

“You are the heart of this practice. Yes, I’m looking into what the next 5–10 years might look like — maybe a partner, maybe mentoring someone, maybe staying the same. Nothing has been decided, and nothing will happen without careful planning and honest conversation. You’ll be the first to know if that changes.”

Result? The team exhaled. Some even thanked her for the honesty. The rumor died on the vine — because the truth wasn’t nearly as scary as the fiction.

3. Share the Why, Not Just the What

Transparency isn’t just spilling the news; it’s sharing the values behind your decisions.

“I care deeply about this team and our patients. Whatever I consider will reflect that.”

Even if you can’t give details yet, anchoring people in purpose builds confidence.

4. Build Regular Check-Ins

Rumors thrive in silence but suffocate in open dialogue.

Create predictable forums — team meetings, one-on-ones, even informal huddles — where updates and questions are welcome. It tells your team: you don’t need to guess; you can ask.

5. Own the “I Don’t Know (Yet)”

Not having all the answers is human. Acting like you do? That’s suspicious.

Be upfront about uncertainties. Saying “We’re still figuring it out” is infinitely better than pretending nothing’s happening.

6. Call Out the Rumors

If you sense a rumor brewing, don’t let it simmer. Gather the team, address it head-on, and clear the air.

Bottom Line

When leaders go quiet, the rumor mill goes loud — and trust me, it’s rarely spinning out sunshine and rainbows.

If you’re not telling your team what’s going on, someone else will — and they won’t have your best interests (or facts) in mind.

So, take a deep breath. Be clear. Be human. Be honest.

Because the best way to kill a conspiracy theory… is with the truth.
